Tutoring in History: Civil War with Cartoons

I am working on a Civil War assignment with one of my students. This was the first war where iron boats floated on the rivers. The Monitor carried Union soldiers, and the Merrimack carried Confederates.

By amazing coincidence, Pearls Before Swine by Stephen Pastis mentioned those very ships today. As pointed out in the cartoon, Guard Duck and the Cat are not quite re-fighting the Civil War. What I want to know is, how did Pastis get two toilets into one bathroom, with no privacy screen between them?  Very, very puzzling.
