Tutor on Grammar -How do I fix it?

comma splice trainA student today asked me about comma splices. The teacher warned Student about them, and the test was coming up…  It’s as if Student had a shameful secret that no one else had.  NOPE.   It’s so common that it’s an internet meme!

Splices-are-run-onsSo what, exactly, is a comma splice? It’s hooking up two sentences into one without signalling it without the proper punctuation. It usually does not cause actual train wrecks. And there’s more than one way to fix it. (See also, The One True Way.)  The sentences usually have related ideas, and fit quite well together – but if there are two complete sentences, the punctuation has to signal that.

  • John is always late for work; nobody seems to care.
  • John is always late for work, but nobody seems to care.
  • John is always late for work, and yet nobody seems to care.
